How the local process works

Keep the plan decision and the center payment separate.

01

Ask before you rely on it

Contact your 529 plan and tax advisor with the type of service you are considering. They can address your plan's rules and your family's circumstances.

02

Pay the center normally

Enrollment and tuition are paid to the center through the usual process.

03

Request reimbursement from your plan

Request reimbursement directly from your own plan. We can provide statements needed for that request; confirm the documents and timing with the plan.

What official guidance says

Federal and New York treatment can differ.

IRS Publication 970 describes conditions under which K–12 tutoring fees may be qualified education expenses, including conditions related to the tutor. It does not make every tutoring provider or family situation eligible.

New York's 529 guidance notes that New York has not yet determined the state treatment of expanded federal K–12 qualified expenses. That means federal and New York treatment may differ.

A local conversation

Discuss tutoring fit before payment details.

A Center Director can explain how support may fit your child's math needs and provide statements for a plan request. Your plan administrator and tax advisor can address whether that request fits your circumstances.

Common questions

Questions to answer before using 529 funds.

Can I use my 529 plan for tutoring?

Eligibility depends on your plan and your particular circumstances. We cannot determine tax treatment or promise reimbursement. Ask your plan administrator and tax advisor before relying on 529 funds.

Do I pay the center through my 529 plan?

Families pay the center normally, then request reimbursement directly from their own plan. Ask the plan what it needs before you submit a request.

Can the center provide a statement?

Yes. We can provide the statements families need for their plan request. Ask your plan or advisor what documentation they recommend keeping.
